We had a lot of wood to deal with, and still quite a few trees to prune. We had been reading of the various benefits of using wood chips as both mulch, and as the basis for planting areas. Knowing we wouldn’t get back there for some time, we could make the most of that wait and leave some wood chips to decompose for a good long time.
The trees are trimmed and pruned, and now more light is flooding into the garden in the afternoons. Looking over the garden we could begin to make out its underlying shape and nature.
So we’d already laid some foundations with the hugelkulturs, but looking around at the trees, the grass not yet fully cut, hedges straining skyward, and stands of weeds encroaching, it was still a daunting task. But we also saw resources.
